Overview
The non-fictional book is a study of 2nd NZEF Veterans who travelled to Italy in 2004 for the official 60th Anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino. The selected images and text depict their journey. The endorse the courage of those veterans who returned, to face their memories, good or bad dreams and perhaps rekindle another life once lived long ago.
Material for the book Return to Monte Cassino has been collected over several years from information gained while employed as official photographer to the 2nd NZEF Veterans who returned to Cassino in 2004. Initially Frewen-Wilks was asked to accumulate imagery suitable for her forthcoming exhibition but the many requests for copies of photographs, prompted her to work on a book. From a seed came a germ of an idea. It was the Veterans who named her exhibition and so, Frewen-Wilks adopted the title for her book – Return to Monte Cassino.
"This book chronicles a trip of a lifetime, which emphasises the ages and war experiences of the solider. It provides the assumption that such a trip is unlikely to be repeated by these veterans."
